One of the greatest joys I experience as a photographer is when I capture Catholic weddings. There is so much beauty and meaning during the nuptial mass, and it is essential that your photographer knows what’s going to happen during the mass before the moment passes. Yes, if your photographer is not Catholic, you can give them a shot list, but unless they’re familiar with the mass itself, they won’t be able to anticipate and position themselves for the shot in the way a Catholic photographer will be able to.
My intention is not to put down other photographers who are not Catholic, I am simply emphasizing that Catholic photographers will be more prepared for your day. When your photographer knows what is happening and when, then you don’t have to worry whether or not they got certain shots or not. You know you are in good hands.
In addition to knowing what is happening and when, Catholic photographers also know why the parts of the mass occur. We see the beauty and importance of the Eucharist, the intentionally chosen readings, and the consecration to Mary. We know the truth, beauty, and goodness that we are witnessing. I personally find that when I photograph something that I know is beautiful, my photos show it. They don’t appear sterile and forced, they are pure and wonderful.
Your nuptial mass will be beautiful no matter what photographer you have. Your photos will last forever and if your photographer knows the what, the when, and the why, then your wedding photos will show it.
